In 1992 Jim Sheridan wrote and directed the movie “Into the West”, the story of two Dublin boys trying to escape poverty in the city and their adventures with a mystical horse called Tir na nOg. Now he is planning a remake set in the United States.

According to Screen Daily Sheridan plans to write and direct the movie and Tim Palmer who produced the original is also on board.

Currently there have been no announcements about the cast. The original movie started Gabriel Byrne, Brendan Gleeson and Ellen Barkin.

The project will be partially funded by the Irish Film Board with a $50,000 grant.

The IMDB synopsis describes the plot of the movie as follows: “A gigantic white stallion appears mysteriously to a Traveller grandfather and his two grandsons in an Irish slum. Since, puzzlingly, the younger of the two boys is the only individual who can control the horse, ownership falls to him and his older brother by default. There being no place for the animal, they move him into the apartment of their alcoholic Traveller father. Police remove him and, in a shady deal, he ends up under control of a wealthy, underhanded horse breeder. The boys manage to retrieve him and escape on his back, but the stallion seems to have his own travelling agenda.”

Will it be called "Into the West II". Or perhaps "Into the [Wild] West". Mind you, there are still a few urban cowboys riding around on horses they bough cheap at Smithfield Fair, animals which are treated appallingly. With most Traveller's housed by Local Authorities, (and charming to live beside), the problem is diminishing.
I Have that movie ,its a prized possession to me, the two boys got right into my heart Gabrial himself wasnt far behind,, the acting SUPERB ,, i could see a continuation of the movie but no way a remake ,, let him get a few ideas of his own ,Ireland is full of good material for a good Movie ,time has proved that ,our Irish actors are excellent,,,,
You cannot improve on perfection,,,,,
Why remake a perfect film?
Sould be renamed, 'Into the East' and follows the adventures of the two heroes Punt and Euro galloping off into the back pocket of some bondholder, never to return...
Just one word. Why? Oh, and another. Don't.
Must see it!
Beautiful movie, it doesn't need to be redone.
One of my favorite movies. Gabriel Byrne was fantastic in it.
