Mary Byrne, the 50-year-old grandmother who has been likened to Susan Boyle since her appearance on British television talent show "X Factor" this past weekend, has already won a talent competition on national television in Ireland.

Byrne, who has worked in a supermarket all her life, won TG4 Irish TV singing contestant in 2005 and received a two year recording deal from it.

However Byrne's debut single "You'll Never Walk Alone" flopped only selling 19 copies during its first week.

Byrne gave up singing when she was in her late 20's but took it back up a few years ago and shared her amazing vocals with locals in pubs in Dublin, Ireland up till now.

Last Saturday night, in front of judges Simon Cowell, Katie Perry, Cheryl Cole and Louis Walsh, Byrne wowed a full house during the Croke Park auditions and millions of viewers with her rendition of I (Who Have Nothing).

Byrne told the judges she stopped singing because she suffered from "low self- esteem."

TG4 producer Tom Evans told the Mirror: "She was very nervous when she appeared on our show. She really lacked confidence in her ability.

"If nothing else, winning the contest gave her belief in herself.

"She's had a tough life and I hope she goes far. I think she will do really well if she goes to the live shows."

After her X Factor audition, single mum Mary told the Mirror: "I did the audition without a nerve in my body but afterwards they kicked in.

"Simon told me I was great and Cheryl said I sent goosebumps down her arm - not bad for a girl behind the till in Tesco.

"I've suffered from bad self-esteem and I used to be more confident when I wasn't this size. Since X Factor I've lost half a stone and my confidence is growing. I'm on top of the world."

Busterbrown, So you are still taking pot shots at Susan. Give it a break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The 'new SuBo' is better than the 'old SuBo'.
HURRAY for an alto voice- no comparison needed- she is in a class all her own as is Susan Boyle!!
I love her alto voice, I hope to hear more of her work!
A WINNER FOR SURE, YOU GO GIRL !!!!
No, not the "new SuBo." She's a marvelous singer in her own right, in't she? Now stop the comparisons, and wish her the best. I do hope she wins!
she has an alto voice like myself ...I don't think it is fair to compare her voice with Susan's ..totally different sound ...yes both have wonderful voices...possibly great one to do a duet with Susan....God Bless them both...I find it wonderful Susan has brought sooo many people out of their shells to do what they love to do (sing)...one thing is I being an alto can sing along with Mary..
