Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are teaming up to make a biopic based on the life of the notorious Boston criminal Whitey Bulger.

“I'm really excited about it,” Damin told GQ Magazine.

The Boston duo, who in 1998 won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for “Good Will Hunting”, confirmed that Damon will play the role of Whitey Bulger while Affleck will co-star and direct the film.

"Boardwalk Empire's" Terence Winter will write the script. “If it’s a straight biopic, we’ll do it over a period of time,” said Damon.

“But it’s always a question of what part of the story do you tell, and biopics are always a little cumbersome. So do we find another way in? We’re still figuring it out.”

Whitey Bulger (81) was a crime lord on the run for 16 years before being captured last June in California. He led the Boston-based Winter Hill Gang and faces federal charges of murder, narcotics distribution, extortion, and money laundering.

"Matt and I have been looking for something to do together for some time," Affleck told Deadline. "We've heard about Whitey Bulger since we were kids, and we are excited by the prospect of putting it on screen."

"There are a couple of competing movies and I don't think it's been announced yet that we're doing it," Damon said speaking to GQ magazine. "But the sooner it's announced the better, just because everyone else will back off, hopefully. I'm really excited about it.

Greg Silverman, Warner Bros Pictures president of production also confirmed the news to Deadline, saying, "It's a perfect fit of story with the ideal artists to bring that story to the screen, and it's so great to be heading back to Boston with Ben and Matt.

Who better to do this film than the amazingly talented Bostonians, Ben Affleck & Matt Damon! We know for certain the accents will be authentic under their informed direction. Hope they do flashbacks to Whitey's childhood...perhaps speculating influences that sent him in the wrong direction as opposed to his brother Billy's high road...and that they make the film before the Old Harbor Housing Project where he grew up is gone.
Who plays Catherine Greig? Meryl Streep?
Because Mr. Gallagher, gangster movies sell, and over the last decade especially Irish gangster pictures. At the same time. Plus, he's from their home town. It's not rocket science. Despite the fact that Bulger is a pretty evil dude, it's a very interesting story.
I can't believe that two respected actors like Ben and Matt could even contemplate doing a piece of work about a piece of crap like Whitey Bulger.
