Baryshnikov and Irish Arts Center premiere ‘Out of Time’ by Colin Dunne
Former ‘Riverdance’ lead takes the stage in first full-length solo show
The Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC) and the Irish Arts Center (IAC) are bringing Colin Dunne’s show “Out of Time” to New York for the first time as part of Imagine Ireland.
“Out of Time” is Colin Dunne’s first full-length solo production. The show is a multi-disciplinary work that integrates movement, sound, and film with Irish step dance vocabulary, pushing the form beyond its formal restrictions and associations into an expressive, theatrical terrain.
Through radio microphones attached to his shoes, Dunne’s movements create a hauntingly evocative sound score.
Collaborating with sound engineer Fionán de Barra, Dunne’s percussive footwork is digitally processed live and then looped, remixed, and layered, giving a new dimension to older steps, while reverberation, distortion, and changes in pitch give rise to a new sound vocabulary.

Dunne is joined onstage by projected archival images of dancers from the 1930’s onward—sourced primarily from the film archives at RTÉ, Ireland’s national broadcaster—as well as footage from Dunne’s own personal collection, including himself as a ten-year-old boy.
All of these elements merge to create a dialogue between past and present. Intimate and playful, Out of Time is both an unsentimental homage to Irish step dance, and a bold investigation of Dunne’s personal and artistic relationship with a tradition that has shaped his life.
Dunne is best known for dancing the principal role in “Riverdance”, replacing the original male lead and choreographer, Michael Flatley, from 1995 to 1998. He also garnered accolades for his choreography and performance in Dancing on Dangerous Ground with Jean Butler.
“Out of Time” will take place at the Baryshnikov Arts Center’s Jerome Robbins Theater, Wednesday through Saturday, October 19 to 22, at 8:00 PM.
