“I was actually thinking about it yesterday,” the Mullingar native told Walters.
“We were heading out to go to a concert and we turned the corner from our hotel and all the girls started running down the main avenue, after us.
“It was like something out of a zombie movie.
“We were like, how could you ever get used to this?”
Styles said he tries to relate to their fans hysteria by thinking of his musical influences.
"I think of my favorite band, especially like when I was younger, and to think that we are some people's favorite band is insane," he says.
"For the people who we're listening to all the time, I still wouldn't probably camp outside places. But people camp out for days to come to things that we do, and it's just amazing."
The full One Direction interview will air on Wednesday December 12 on ABC as part of "Barbara Walters Presents the 10 Most Fascinating People of 2012.
Fifty Shades of Grey author E.L. James was another one of Walter's picks, along with Family Guy creator Guy Seth MacFarlane and New Jersey governor Chris Christie.
