100 years from now, when all people are free from the tyranny of hatred, Anne Hathaway will be seen as a visionary. Those who stand in the way of Civil Rights will be remembered the same as the slave owners in the mid-nineteenth century; with contempt. And the Internet will be there to record it. Thank you Anne from a proud gay American.
I THINK ANNE HATHAWAY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HERSELF. I MEAN REALLY!!! SHE LITERALLY LOST HER RELIGION OVER SOME NONSENSE. WHO IS SHE TO TRY TO TELL THE OUR PRESIDENT TO RECONSIDER HIS VALUES??? MAYBE SHE SHOULD RECONSIDER HERS!
@armaghabu You are missing my point and maybe it is you who should think a little more. My main point is that over two milennia the basic definition of marriage has not altered in an anthropological, social or religious sense. Various communities around the world even have fertility rites associated with it. The fact that marriage has been used for various reasons e.g achieving legal status illegally still does not alter it's widely understood definition.
You should try to think a little more than you do Gearoid4. The institute of marriage has been reserved since time immemorial for a man and many women; or as a political arrangement; or as an economic deal; or as a trick to win immigration status; or as financial necessity, too. It's a legal arrangement, in a democracy it can not be denied to classes of people you don't favor simply because you don't favor them.
It's no wonder that gay marriage is such a "hot button" issue when people can't agree on the definition of marriage. Most of us hold the views of our family, our life experiences, and the church in which we were raised.
The institute of marriage has been reserved since time immemorial for a man and a woman for their mutual love and the procreation of children. No special pleading will change that.
