Bono has told the Guardian newspaper that now is a very hard time for rock stars like him to be urging people to help the Third World, especially Africa.

Referring to the tough economic times Bono stated  “It's really not a time to be a rich rock star talking about poor people, I'll tell you that, or a film star, or a first lady or a … – there's just something... it's like "Why don't you just piss off back to your chateau" – and so I'm kind of delighted that people keep doing it.

“Outside the UK, we won't get much coverage for these issues without famous faces – and without coverage, politicians are less supportive.”

The interview took place in Ghana where Bono was visiting to point out that country’s huge success in stopping AIDS spread.

He especially praised British leader David Cameron for his effort son helping with foreign aid and said Ghana was an example of how success in Africa can be achieved.

“I'm particularly proud because a third of the Global Fund's resources in Ghana are paid for by RED [founded in 2006 to raise money for the Global Fund by selling branded products via Nike, Apple, Starbucks and others]… and One and other campaign groups helped raise much of the rest from other donors. So I was very overpowered yesterday as I saw the hospital, and I am buoyed by that. And you've near universal education. For instance the Millennium Challenge is building 240 new schools.

That's pretty great. The hard data tells us that Ghana's had over 14% growth in the last year. We think that malaria is down by over 50%, maybe over 60%, which is astonishing.

Bono also stated that the west can no longer ignore what is happening to the Third World.

"As we know more about each other it's impossible to keep up the scam that brutal, ugly, dumb poverty is something we can live with."

Why is it that those of you worked up about Bono and the tax business never go after his "lovely" wife Ali, who has made a career out of sponging off Bono's work? She snagged him early on, pumped out a few kids, got him to fund her crappy fashion line, while not being able to dress herself appropriately. Every time Bono is out there rabbiting on about Africa, Ali is right next to him the whole time doing the exact same thing, living the exact same high life he is - only she didn't do any of the work he did to get there, and she benefits just as much as he does from the tax evasion. Possibly more - he's indulging her stupid fashion line dream. And she's not "beautiful." Stop trying to be nice about it.
Bono deserves respect for telling it like it is, and still, knowing that you people will rake him over the coals, will not give up lending his voice to this cause dear to heart. I read jealousy between the lines here, by people who would begrudge U2 their well earned financial status. And AWOKEN32 is WRONG about Bono's taxes. The group moved a corporate account based on sound buiness practices, but all of you are too quick to misunderstand, and not count in all the other taxes the individuals of U2 are putting back into the Irish economy. You're blind and happy to be so. I feel sorry for you and very proud of Bono and Ali!
From a man who does not pay any tax out of his fortune in his motherland, who also sang kill the boar on his recent south african tour while the ANC are commintting genocide against the white in that country, pure hypocrite plain an simple
No, Bono..CHARITY is for those WHO HAVE ONLY THEIR OWN TO GIVE...So odd that Bono cannot see how countless Irish gave their sons and daughters to help Bono exploit his Irish heritage..Only so he could then turn around and sh*t all over it because the industry he endeavors in has been compromised by an African faction, extremely hostile to his prosperity..What Bono gives is NOT CHARITY...He ORDAINS PRIVILLAGES TO THOSE WHO ASSIST HIS SANCTIMONY FOR OBVIOUS REASON...HE IS SCARED AND THREATENED WITH LOSING POWER...He is a fool Plantation owner...and that is how the African history will eventually write him off as...expendable...He misses the point of slavery being "evil" in more ways then he can imagine...He only sees it from a black perspective.
"ensconsed there on their yachts" Be honest. What WOULD anyone do if you had more money than God ? A man MUST be judged on his actions. He does ALOT of work for charities AND during that time has someone keep his books. His ACCOUNTANT does his books. IF an accountant believes it is better for his CLIENT to move his money to Scotland , the money goes to Scotland. The client really doesn't KNOW what or where his money goes. He sometimes has SOME 'input' , as in buying into a football club , or investing in mushroom farms BUT most of the stuff that goes on in accounting is done by accountants. I don't think everyone appreciates what comes with HAVING lot of money. It is a bit more than just keeping it in an account in the bank. His charity work over the decades PROVES the mans' .. worth. Imho.
Yes indeed Bono.. as they drove the M3 through Tara .. you said nothing because you wanted planning permission for your own hotel... when others were saying hang on.. you were part of the celtic tiger greed... once we stopped giving you tax breaks .. you stopped paying tax.. poverty in other countries comes before the starving children of Ireland..and yet you still claim credentials from ballymum.. smell anything yet. ah yeas good ole irish bullshit.
Mary Davis has 'experience of' over 100 countries. Bono cares about the poor. Sean Brady is Ireland's leading ethicist. As a nation we seem to be remarkably willing to be naive.
Perhaps with the exception of his tax avoidance in Ireland, this man is a shining example of moral rectitude, and proof that fame and wealth can be perfectly compatible with being caring about the downtrodden and those less fortunate. Moreover, along with his U2 buddies he represents the most successful Irish export in recent memory. Particularly for his Irish critics, it must take a rather perverted mind and/or envy to reject his message and success.
Bono is truly a legend in his own mind. Bob Geldof quietly goes about doing what he feels is the right thing and trying to make a difference without blowing his own horn while Bono is only capable of carrying out his efforts with the press tagging along to document his Saint-like posing.
I'm sure his warmonger buddies like slimy sanctimonious Tony Blair or the utterly crazy Rick Santorum will comfort him in this crisis. I've remained Catholic despite the horrors that have been revealed about the actions of a small number of priests. But I am seriously reviewing my church affiliation--I don't want to be in Heaven if creeps like Blair, Santorum-- and Anglican Bono-- are ensconsed there on their yachts.
Yes- it is a tough time for tax exile rock stars. He's had a terrible experience what with the corporate governance issues around his assistance in privatising development aid with his 'One' consultancy in New York. I just hope the Mary Davis of rock can recover from his current ordeal.
