Still soaking up the limelight from their Star Wars appearance, the Dingle peninsula in County Kerry has been named as one of the best places in the world to let down the roof of the car and embrace the open road by influential travel publication Condé Nast Traveler.
The Kingdom’s beautiful country roads and magnificent driving routes have earned it a number four position on the publication’s list of Top 10 Convertible Drives in Europe, a great achievement considering the Irish climate normally has us all ducking for shelter from the rain, not cracking back our car’s roof.
Featured in the 1970 film “Ryan’s Daughter,” the Slea Head Drive along the peninsula is described as a must-see, with incredible views in all directions set to cause you whiplash from trying to keep up with all the beautiful scenery.
"Summer in Ireland begs for a slow-paced drive along the southwest Dingle Peninsula," Condé Nast write.
"Follow the 30-mile coastal loop clockwise alongside craggy cliffs on Slea Road, minding herds of sheep crossing.”
Named after the beautiful town of Dingle, the peninsula also features Conor’s Pass, a narrow, twisting road, and the highest mountain pass in Ireland.

A slow-drive around in your convertible may even treat you to a few phrases of Irish, as the peninsula is home to to one of the country’s most prominent Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking) areas.
