The award winning Broadway musical ‘Once’ began a one week run in Dublin’s Gaiety theatre last Friday, as part of the European Premiere of the show.

The hit Broadway show was inspired by the Oscar award winning movie of the same name, which is set in Dublin.

Starring Declan Bennett and  Zrinka Cvitešić, the show won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical. Directed by John Tiffany, the screenplay for the musical was written by award-winning Irish playwright and screenwriter Enda Walsh, with music and lyrics by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. The show will also begin a West End  run on March 16.

Speaking to the Irish Voice in 2012, Glen Hansard spoke about his delight in the success of the show.

“I would never have said that that I would make a music film with my friend John Carney and my friend Marketa Irglova and it would win an Academy Award and then become a stage musical on Broadway,” he reveals
