Ireland’s hottest comedy duo have narrowing missed out on the Christmas number one spot.

Despite a huge marketing campaign and thousands of fans around Ireland snapping up their single “Horse Outside”, the Limerick duo of Blindboy Boatclub and Mr Chrome have been pipped to the post by the “X Factor” winner Matt Cardle.

At the last count Cardle’s single was outselling “Horse Outside” by more than 25,000 units.

“We are now taking some time off after a hectic few weeks, before coming back with some new tracks”, said Blind Boy Boatclub.

Since launching their single two weeks ago on RTE television it has clocked up over 3.7million hits on YouTube.

The Rubber Bandits confirmed that new stock of their hit single arrived at music stores around Ireland in recent days after copies of their single flew off the shelves.

According to a staffer at HMV Limerick, "Our first delivery of the single sold out in about three hours. We received a larger delivery last Saturday and we sold out by 3pm. People were actively seeking the single out. Sales are incredibly high for a physical single,” he told the Limerick Leader.

The promo was originally made by the RTE program “Republic of Telly” and has made the Rubberbandits a comedy sensation the world over, in the last two weeks.

Their single has even spread to China, where their music video has become popular on Chinese video sharing site Youku. The song has even been complete with local language subtitles.

Speaking about losing out to the “X Factor” star, Blindboy Boatclub said: "The young fella with the horse outside didn't have a major record company behind him and his CDs got lost in the snow on the way to the shops,"

"Seriously, how could two young fellas compete with the 'X Factor'? To have a Christmas number one you need to do some serious planning. We just put a video up on YouTube a few weeks back and everyone wanted it to be the Christmas number one," he told Joe.ie.

He also admitted that appearing on Joe Duffy’s  well known RTE radio show was "the best promo for us we will ever get".

Despite not making it to number one, the Limerick duo are still celebrating this Christmas having signed a “significant” record deal  and promise of an new RTE series for 2011.
