"The Hunger Games" and "Bridesmaids" both have eight nods apiece, which will see them go up against each other for Best Cast and Movie of the Year alongside 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2', 'The Help' and 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1'.

Jennifer Lawrence's portrayal of Katniss Everdeen in 'The Hunger Games' - the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' book trilogy - will see her take on 'Bridesmaids' star Kristin Wiig for Best Female Performance, as well as Emma Stone ('Crazy Stupid Love'), Emma Watson ('Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2') and Rooney Mara ('The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo').

Rooney is also up for Breakthrough Performance and Best On-Screen Transformation for her portrayal of computer hacker Lisbeth Salander in the English language version of the Swedish thriller alongside Daniel Craig.

Nominees for the 2012 MTV Movie Awards were selected by a panel of actors, producers and agents for the first time, instead of members of the public voting online, but fans will still be able to choose the winners.

A number of new categories will feature at this year's event including Best On-Screen Dirtbag - which sees Bryce Dallas Howard, Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Oliver Cooper and Jon Hamm all nominated - and Best Gut-Wrenching Performance.

The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards will take place on June 3 at Los Angeles' Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City and broadcast live on MTV, and fan voting for the accolades opens on Tuesday.
