Stephen Gately, the former Boyzone star, died from natural causes, the official investigation into the Irish singers death concluded on Friday. Spanish judge Carmen Abrines concluded the case three months after tragedy struck in Majorca.

Gately’s family, including his husband Andy Cowles, was informed of the court’s decision last night. Stephen (33) had collapsed and died at the couple's holiday home in Port d’Andratx on the Spanish island after a night out last October.

The judges’ ruling contradicts salacious claims made in the British tabloid press that there was a sinister aspect to the manner in which Gately died. In The Daily Mail columnist Jan Moir wrote: “Healthy and fit 33-year-old men do not just climb into their pajamas and go to sleep on the sofa, never to wake up again.” Instead, Moir implied, the Irish singer’s death struck her as “unnatural” and she suggested it could be the result of his so-called “lifestyle.”

Judge Abrines’ ruling contradicted Moir's sensational claims and settled the matter, however. Earlier Abrines had studied police and pathology reports and had questioned Gately’s husband. An autopsy revealed conclusively that Stephen had suffered from an undiagnosed heart condition, atheromatosis, or a thickening of the arteries. Although the star had drunk heavily and smoked cannabis shortly before he died, these were not factors in his death, the state pathologist informed the judge.

In her report Judge Abrines, who sits at the Court of Instruction Number 10 in Palma, Majorca, wrote: “I have concluded that the death was due to natural causes. At no moment in the police investigation, or in the autopsy, were there any indications of violence. The initial autopsy found no signs of violence and pointed to a natural death.”

The singer, who was the heart and soul of the Irish band, is deeply missed by his band mates, as their latest video makes clear. Click here to view the video.
