One Direction and their debut album ‘Up All Night’ has officially debuted at number one in the United States, granting them the bragging rights of the first ever UK group to do so. With the accomplishment, One Direction beats out other legendary UK groups such as The Beatles and The Spice Girls by going directly to number one upon debut in the US.

By selling 176,000 copies of ‘Up All Night,’ One Direction secured the top spot on the US Billboard charts. The same album only made it to number two on the UK record charts upon its release across the pond in December.

The nearest UK group debut? The Spice Girls in 1997, when they came in at a distant sixth place.

One Direction, made up of Irish-born Niall Horan and UK-born Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson, are under the wise leadership of Simon Cowell. The group was formed in the 2010 season of the UK’s ‘X Factor,’ but only came in third place. Cowell then signed the lads to his label Syco.

Upon One Direction’s unprecedented success, Cowell said "I couldn't be happier for One Direction, it is an incredible achievement. They deserve it. They have the best fans in the world."

The bandmates were equally as excited.  Styles said: "It's beyond a dream come true for us. We want to thank each and every one of our fans in the US who bought our album and we would also like to thank the American public for being so supportive of us."

Niall Horan said, "We just found out that we are Number One in America and as you can imagine, we are over the moon. When we got put together as a group, we couldn't imagine ourselves coming to America, let alone releasing our album here, so for us to be sitting at the top of the US album charts is unbelievable. We are so grateful to everyone who has supported us in the US."

The news of their record-setting debut comes the same week that children’s programming network Nickelodeon announced that the band will be receiving their own television show on the channel.
