The Irish Government’s Arts Minister, Jimmy Deenihan has  welcomed the filming of the new TV series ‘Titanic, Blood and Steel’ which is set to bring a $16m (€12m) boost to the Irish economy as well as 200 temporary jobs for Irish cast and crew.

The show, starring Neve Campbell (‘Scream’), Chris Noth (‘Sex in the City’), Liam Cunnigham and others, will tell the tale of the construction of the Titanic in Edwardian Belfast. The mini-series’ finale will be the launch of the ship on its maiden, and tragically, last voyage when 1,517 lost their lives on April 15, 1912.

Deenihan said the series will broadcast to “millions of viewers all over the world” and would help promote Ireland as a film location and tourist destination. He also hinted that the Irish Film Board (IFB) would soon announce other new projects which plan to film in Ireland.

While visiting the set he said “I'm delighted to visit the set of Titanic: Blood & Steel, which will invest over €12 million in the Irish economy on local goods and services, as well as creating over 200 jobs for Irish cast and crew.

"Images of Ireland will be broadcast to millions of viewers all over the world, presenting great promotional value to Ireland. Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board played a major role in bringing this production to Ireland, working closely with producers Epos Films, and we hope to be in a position to announce more new projects which will film on location in Ireland very shortly."

Historical locations used in filming will include the Georgian terrace of Henrietta Street, Howth Castle, the Guinness factory, Earlsfort Terrace, Palmerstown House, the National Botanic Gardens and Clancy Barracks, all in Dublin. In the series Dublin will stand in for Belfast City, where the ship was built.

Other stars in the cast of ‘Titanic, Blood and Steel’ include Michael McElhatton, Martin McCann, Derek Jacobi and Kevin Zegers of “Gossip Girl”. The producers are Dublin-based Epos Films and the director is Irishman Ciaran Donnelly who has previously directed on “The Tudors” and “Inspector George Gently” series.

This TV series is due to air next year, the centenary of the sinking.
