Miss Connecticut Erin Brady was crowned Miss USA 2013 at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on Sunday. She will represent the U.S. in the Miss Universe pageant in the winter.

The Central Connecticut State University finance major said she was looking forward to telling her bosses at Prudential Financial that she would not be coming in tomorrow or ever according to The Daily Mail. She said, “They’re going t be very upset to learn that I’m not coming.”

Brady, who is from Glastonbury, Connecticut will receive a New York apartment for one year. During her reign, she is expected to go on a nationwide speaking tour to raise awareness about breast and ovarian cancer, which is the official cause of the organization.

Wearing a white and gold evening dress Brady won the beauty pageant after answering a question about the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to uphold widespread DNA tests. She said she agreed with the court’s decision.

Miss Utah Marissa Powell had more difficulty with the question portion. A judge asked her, “A recent report shows that in 40 per cent of American families with children, women are the primary earners yet they continue to earn less than men. What does this say about society?”

She responded, “I think we can relate this back to education, and how we are continuing to strive . . . to . . . figure out how to create jobs right now. That is the biggest problem right now.” She went on, “I think, especially the men are . . . um . . . seen as the leaders of this, and so we need to see how to . . . create education better. So that we can solve this problem. Thank you.” A video of her response (see bottom of this article) has gone viral.

The pageant was hosted by Nick Jonas and co-anchor of “E! News” Giuliana Rancic. The Jonas Brothers performed “Pom Poms” during the swimsuit competition. A recording of “Sweet Nothing” was played during the evening gown competition.

The judges’ panel consisted of fashion designer Betsey Johnson, “Biggest Loser” star Bob Harper and “Wait Wait . . . Don’t Tell Me” star Mo Rocca. The Huffington Post reported that Rocca said he was looking for a Miss USA who reminded him of Abraham Lincoln but “without the beard.”

Last year’s winner Olivia Culpo won the international pageant and became the first Miss USA to win the Miss Universe title in 16 years. Miss Maryland Nana Meriwether, who was the first runner up, took over for her for the rest of the year.
