It has been a week of surprises on ‘American Idol’ news when in the space of two days, Steve Tyler and Jennifer Lopez announced they are both stepping down from Idol after two years.
According to Us Weekly, Mariah Carey may be joining the panel and there is talk of Randy Jackson stepping down also. A source told Us “They are in serious talks with Mariah and it’s very close to being a done deal.”
Lopez and Tyler’s news came within the space of two days. Tyler made his announcement on Thursday.
“After some long... hard...thoughts... I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress ‘American Idol’ before she boils my rabbit,” he said in a statement.
“I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I’m back -- but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I’ve got two fists in the air and I’m kicking the door open with my band.”
J Lo broke her news the following day on “Idol” host, Ryan Seacrest’s radio show.
“I really was dreading this phone call with you,” she told him. “I honestly feel like the time has come that I have to get back to doing the other things that I do that I’ve put on hold because I love ‘Idol’ so much.”
In an interview on Thursday with the Associated Press, Lopez did mention that she was saddened to hear that Tyler was leaving and that his departure would play a role in her decision. The pair had become very close since they started on the show two years ago together.
This leaves Randy Jackson alone on the judging panel, who may also be making some changes with his role on the show.
While ‘Idol’ fans may be disappointed at the news of the two judges departures, Ryan Seacrest, the shows host signed a contract in the spring to renew his contract for two more years.
