The studio is thought to be more focused on getting the part filled than whether or not the actor cast has screen chemistry with Dakota Johnson, who plays Anastasia Steele in the flick.

Other big names that have been bandied about concerning the part include popular favorite Matt Bomer, Luke Bracey and James Franco.

But Dornan is reportedly the current frontrunner to play Christian Grey in the film version of EL James's best-selling erotic novel.

According to E! News, the 31-year-old had a very successful test read with the casting directors.

Dakota Johnson, the daughter of actors Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, is not a consideration sources say.

Scott Eastwood, 27, son of legendary actor and director Clint Eastwood, is also reportedly being considered for the role.

"Fifty Shades of Grey" is expected to be released in the United States on July 1 next year.

British visual artist and film-maker Sam Taylor-Johnson will direct. Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca (producers of the Oscar-winning "The Social Network") will produce.
