This week the 30th anniversary, of Northern Ireland’s own, amazing DeLorean will be celebrated as the 80 remaining cars will visit the city. The brilliant but doomed example of innovation was made famous in the “Back to the Future” movie franchise as the time machine.

The DeLorean was produced from 1981 to 1983 just outside Belfast in Dunmurry. Only 9,000 of the cars were produced. In fact by the time the car was featured in the “Back to the Future” movie franchise the company had already gone bankrupt.

Eurofest 2011 will give thousands of people the chance to bask in the glow of the much loved Northern Irish car. The group of 80 cars will travel to Carrickfergus Castle and also the World Autotest at the Odyssey Arena, where they will take part in time trials according to Inside Ireland reports.  Who knows what will happen if they hit 88 mph.

Launching the Festival, the Lord Mayor, Councillor Pat Convery said “DeLorean is an iconic image which represents the ambition and innovation, which for centuries made Belfast famous. I hope the people of Northern Ireland take the opportunity to attend one of the events and join with us in celebrating DeLorean ‘Made in Belfast.’”

Robert Lamrock, a Director of the Delorean Owners Association said: “This year’s festival is of particular importance to DeLorean fans as it marks the 30th Anniversary of when the first DeLorean “Made in Belfast” rolled off the production line and into the history books.

“As always, we are delighted to have 80 of the cars in town and delegates from 21 countries attending the various events.”
