Comedic host Stephen Colbert paid tribute to Boston on his show “The Colbert Report” Tuesday night. During his monologue he joked how the city was founded on toughness.
The Irish American star said “Whoever did this obviously did not know s*** about Boston, because nothing these terrorists do is going to shake them.”
“For Pete’s sake, Boston was founded by the pilgrims. A people so tough they had to buckle their goddamn hats on.”
He also joked that the terrorists had chosen their event poorly because the Boston Marathon is “an event celebrating people who run 26 miles on their day off until their nipples are raw- for fun.”
Colbert went on to say that the people of Boston have braved their struggles in the past and he made jokes about the famous ‘Big Dig,’ a construction project that took sixteen years to transform a highway into a tunnel.
Colbert used his monologue to talk about stories of bravery and kindness after the bombings. He finished by saying, “These maniacs may have tried to make life bad for the people of Boston. But all they can ever do is show just how good those people are.”
Comedic host Jon Stewart also praised Boston’s strength on his “The Daily Show” before “The Colbert Report” aired. Stewart told viewers how much he disliked that he “can cross-reference my thoughts to so many other events that have occurred over the years of a similar ilk.”
He continued “I’m just going to say this to Boston: thank you. Thank you for once again, in the face of gross inhumanity, inspiring and solidifying my believe in humanity and the people of this country.”
At the Boston Marathon on Monday, two bombs exploded near the finish line and killed three people, an eight year old boy and two women. 170 people were injured and several injuries required amputation. Several of the marathon runners ran another two miles to the hospital to donate blood to the victims.
Investigators are still looking for the person or people responsible and have not yet determined a motive.
