Background: Daragh Muldowney of Dúlra Photography currently lives in Dublin. On October 4 he will unveil his photographic exhibition of rock pools called Jewellery Box – Ireland’s Hidden Gems, at the Irish Consulate in New York.

How did you first become interested in photography?

“My interest in photography originally developed while scuba diving in 1992, when I was awestruck by being under water and the sights that I saw. Life under the sea was like another world, where I made an instant and profound connection with nature.

“Determined to share this experience, I bought a Canon camera, now a 30-year-old model that I still use, and began taking photographs. Aiming to capture nature’s finer detail and convey some of its abstract beauty, my work is a gentle reminder for us to appreciate our beautiful planet.”

Tell us about your upcoming exhibit in New York.

“Jewellery Box - Ireland’s Hidden Gems is a collection of photographic images from rock pools around the coast of Ireland. Seventeen counties touch the sea on this beautiful island and there is at least one image from the coastline of every one.

“It took me nine weeks to circumnavigate Ireland in my campervan. There are 65 images in the book and I will be exhibiting approximately 37 images at the Consulate General of Ireland this October. I don't use artificial light or filters and there is no enhancement in the printing process.”

You traveled 3,143 miles around Ireland as part of this project. What was the most beautiful spot you came across?

“That's really difficult because Ireland is abundant with stunning coastal locations. I was really impressed with some of the Waterford coast as I did not expect it to be as dramatic as it turned out to be.

"Glasoilleann in Galway is a personal favorite, just south of Killary Harbor.  Glasoilleann means green island, and at high tide you can see the island but at low tide you can walk out to the island and explore the rockpools.

“All 17 counties have something to offer, though, and one of the reasons I went to all of them and have at least one image from each one is to show that each county has it's own stunning beauty if you stop and look.”

What is your advice for aspiring photographers?

“If you have an idea, go and fulfill it. If you don't have an idea get out there and photograph as many different types of things and people as possible until you do get a concept together, and most importantly enjoy the journey. It's just like life really. Get amongst it!”

What are the details of your New York exhibition?

“It is open to the public. It will be open from October 5, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily at at the Irish Consulate, 17th Floor, 345 Park Avenue, New York, until October 31 and by appointment. I can be contacted at daragh@dulra.com, or 011-353-87-293-9374. And visit www.dulra.com.”
