In full disguise as a man, Glenn Close filmed her newest project ‘Albert Nobbs’ in Dublin last year. With a few film festival debuts under its belt now, the role of Albert Nobbs is gaining Close high praise and some serious Oscar buzz.

The film, set in 19th century Dublin, focuses on a woman who disguises herself as a man named Albert Nobbs in hopes of attaining a better life for herself. Complications, of course, arise when she is found out and has a chance meeting with another woman who is trying to pass as well.

“I don’t think she knows [if she’s gay],” says Close in an interview with the Daily Beast. “She has no knowledge of sexuality. She disappears for her own protection but she happens to disappear into a job where you’re expected to be invisible, so she’s an invisible person in an invisible job, and that makes her lose sight of herself.”

Close goes on to say in the Daily Beast interview how her own childhood enhanced her connection to the role of Albert Nobbs. She explains how her family was recruited by a religious cult, which drove mandates of certain expected behaviors. “It’s cult living where you’re told what to say and how to act. It’s very sexually repressive and yet you’re supposed to be re-making the world, but you re-make the world in someone else’s eyes, so you give up your individuality.” Close removed herself from the cult when she was 22 years old.

Glenn Close and Jonathan Rhys Meyers begin filming The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs in Dublin

The ‘Albert Nobbs’ project is near and dear to lead Glenn Close as she was involved with a production of it 1982 at the Manhattan Theater Club. Since then, she’s been working to bring it to the big screen.  With a tight budget, the film wrapped in only an impressive 32 days on location in Dublin in 2010.

"I believe in this story and its potential to take everyone on a sensuous, funny, heart-breaking, wildly unexpected ride," the actress has reportedly said.

Alongside Close are other Irish actors Brendan Gleeson, as a drunk doctor, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, as a promiscuous viscount. The film debuted at Telluride Film Festival and is delivering some serious Oscar buzz for Close, who has yet to win an Academy Award. Catch the trailer for ‘Albert Nobbs’ below.
