The first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, premiered this weekend online and in US cinemas.

The seventh film in the franchise, which is set about 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, will reunite original stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher.

Parts of the movie were shot in Ireland on Skellig Michael island off the coast of County Kerry.

The 88-second trailer opens with a sweeping desert landscape and features shots of the Millennium Falcon, British star John Boyega wearing a Stormtrooper uniform, and actress Daisy Ridley on a new type of speeder bike. A new cross-shaped lightsaber was also revealed.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 18, 2015. The JJ Abrams movie will be the first new addition to the series in a decade, the BBC reports.
