Details of the Doolin Short Story Competition 2013 have been announced by the Irish Writers' Centre in association with Hotel Doolin.
The competition winners will be judged by acclaimed Irish playwright and novelist John MacKenna, winner of the Irish Times Fiction Award; the Cecil Day Lewis Literary Award; and the Hennessy New Irish Writing Award. The Kildare native’s most recent novel, ‘The Space Between Us’ was short-listed for the Kerry Book of the Year Award.
A prize fund of €1,000 will be awarded to the winning entrant, with €600 and €400 prizes for the second and third placed entries respectively.
The winners will be announced at the inaugural Doolin Writer’s Weekend in County Clare on 24-26 May 2013. The Weekend will feature workshops, lectures and readings by some of Ireland’s leading writers, intermixed with live traditional Irish music sessions in the North Clare village.
Event organizer and Doolin Hotel General Manager, Donal Minihane described the Doolin Writer’s Weekend as “a great opportunity for aspiring writers as well as literary fans and published authors to get together and celebrate everything that is good about Irish literature.”
He continued: “Many artists and writers spent time in Doolin, including J.M. Synge, George Bernard Shaw, Dylan Thomas, Augustus John and Oliver St. John Gogarty. This summer we look forward to welcoming back some of Ireland’s best writers for what we hope will become an annual literary event in North Clare.”
“Hotel Doolin prides itself on being independent, unique, innovative and creative, all qualities you would find in a budding writer, so we came up with the Doolin Short Story competition to help support aspiring local and national writers. We know it is a long and arduous road for writers trying to make a name for themselves so we hope that this competition will give a boost to the competition winners and you never know, we could unearth the next J.M. Synge or George Bernard Shaw in the process,” Mr. Minihane concluded.
Entries to the Doolin Short Story Competition 2013 can be on any theme and should be no longer than 3,000 words. The entry fee is €7 and closing date for entries is Monday 8th April, 5pm. All three winning entries will feature on the Irish Writers’ website and the story placed first will also appear in print in The Clare People.
