Photographer Thomas Knights’ latest project, “Red Hot,” celebrates the beauty of red-haired males with an upcoming stills and video exhibition. Of course Conan O’Brien, arguably America’s most famous redhead, gave the exhibition his seal of approval and even joined in on the act.
Team Coco said, “An art exhibit is trying to sex up redheads' image, but there's one ginger that's clearly the sexiest by far.” The video, which is maybe not quite what Knights had in mind, is below.
Knights being a redhead himself, has experienced personally the negative perceptions that come with being ginger, and, having no red-haired male public role models to persuade him otherwise, he grew up feeling ashamed of his red roots.
On his site Knights wrote, “In the UK and throughout the world, being ginger and male comes with many stigmas attached. Many are bullied at school and for some, even later in life.
“As far as I can see, no one has focused (or noticed) the huge, polarised gap between the way our society perceives red headed women (often the ultimate woman - think Jessica Rabbit) and red headed males (often emasculated and de-sexulised in film and TV - no Hollywood heroes - no leading men).
“No other hair colour has this level of gender inequality in any society, and Red Hot holds a mirror up to the preconceived limitations we put on the red headed males.
“Essentially, what I’m doing is creating an exciting and revealing exhibition showcasing a positive outlook on the red-haired male, and aiming to re-brand the ginger male stereotype along the way.”
Working as a fashion photographer and music video director, Knights has had his work featured in Vogue Italia, Dazed and Confused, and Marie Claire, and has worked with Marina and the Diamonds, Labrinth, Rosin Murphy and Maya Jane Coles.
