Irish actor Chris O’Dowd, who skyrocketed to fame following his role in ‘Bridesmaids’ last summer, could have another big picture on his hands.

Hollywood mega-player Harvey Weinstein has acquired the rights to the Australian Aboriginal film ‘The Sapphires’ in which O’Dowd stars and will be screened at Cannes Film Festival this month.

‘The Sapphires’ is a film based on a true story about an Australian Aboriginal girl musical group who played in Vietnam for US troops in 1968. In the film, Roscommon native O’Dowd plays the group’s manager.

Deadline.com describes O’Dowd’s character Dave as, “a good-humored talent scout with a kind heart, very little rhythm but a great knowledge of soul music. As their manager, Dave books the sisters their first true gig giving them their first taste of stardom, and travels them to Vietnam to sing for the American troops.”

Very interestingly, Forbes points out that the film’s trajectory is proving to be similar to the Oscar-winning film ‘The Artist.’ Last year, Harvey Weinstein had seen “The Artist,” bought it, and featured it at the Cannes Film Festival.

Now, similar to ‘The Artist,’ buzz is growing about ‘The Sapphires’ though it won’t be screened until later in the week at Cannes. Hopefully O’Dowd will enjoy the same successes that the Weinstein-backed ‘The Artist’ enjoyed this year.
