Mayo County Council left locals scratching their heads when they painted up a nice new road sign at Shanagahy, Ballina.

Perhaps the sign painter had a few too many before taking on the task of alerting motorists to a turn.

Or perhaps he just did it for "devilment" that well known Irish trait that allows people to have a laugh at Mayo County Council's expense.

Either way the sign got painted and locals were not long in discovering the mistake and the photograph soon went viral in Ireland.

So we thought our American, Canadian, Australian readers might enjoy it too.

Sorry Mayo County Council...what?

- And then there’s the sign spotted a water’s edge which warns the public not to impersonate Jesus under anyway circumstances.
