John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara in McLintock!

An auction of Rock, Pop and Movie Memorabilia in Dublin has unearthed a poster from the the 1963 Western comedy “McLintock!” which draws surprising comparisons with last year’s infamous release “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

“McLintock!” starred western legend John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara, most famous for their earlier pairing in the 1952 film “The Quiet Man,” and its advertising certainly would have created much controversy if released today.

The vintage poster depicts a scene in “McLintock!” in which Wayne’s character, cattle-rancher McLintock, settles scores with his estranged wife Katherine (Maureen O’Hara) by spanking her. The scene is similar to that of “The Quiet Man” and the infamous “dragging scene” in which O’Hara’s character, Mary Kate, is forcibly pulled through the fields by Wayne.

Despite the fact that a film such as “Fifty Shades of Grey” would have been unthinkable for 1960’s Ireland, the poster depicts a set-up that would draw up completely different connotations in this post-"Fifty Shades" era than it would have at the release of “McLintock!”. The poster allows us to see the changed attitudes in regards to violence against women and the sometimes sexual nature of violence against women since the 1960s and the ways in which social attitudes have shifted.

The poster went to auction on March 15 2015 among dozens of other vintage posters. The poster, signed by John’s son Michael Wayne, who produced the movie, is set to sell for between $110 and $170 (€100-€150).

We wonder if Donegal parish priests also banned this one from cinemas!
