There’s nothing quite so heartwarming as the look on a parent’s face when they discover their son or daughter living overseas has surprised them with a visit home. But with the influx of such videos in recent years, it’s hard to come up with new and creative ways to give parents the shock of their lives.

From a son suddenly appearing from the ocean to the simple trick of appearing in the house as your parents wake up one morning, this generation of Irish emigrants have brought tears to the eyes of many by capturing the beauty of parental love.

Triona Fitzgerald, from Waterford, was one such emigrant, and as she returned from the US, where she had been living for a year, she was determined to surprise her Mam in the most unusual way possible—by dressing up as a duck.

The 24-year-old captured her journey from the States on Snapchat and enlisted help in setting up a camera in the kitchen to record the reaction. It shows Triona as she strolls up to the kitchen window wearing a duck mask, much to the bemusement of her mother, who can’t figure out who’s quacking at her from the driveway.

The reveal results in both shock and fits of giggles, with plenty of jokes about flying back home.

"We had a really hard year and have been grieving the loss of a loved one so it was a very special reunion," she told Independent.ie.

"I wanted to bring a smile to their faces after a hard year and my duck mask from Amazon did the trick."
