Pride of place this week goes to the Kendall A team following a superb 2-0 win over New York Pancyprian Freedoms that saw Wanderers advance to the semi-finals of the 2015 Werner Fricker USASA Open Cup Region I Qualifiers.

The club was unable to secure a field in the Boston area for the Sunday afternoon clash, but the drive out to Progin Park in Lancaster proved more than worthwhile after Robbie Sabadoz and Mike Bridges struck the goals that saw the Kendall through.

Kendall are likely to be on the road for the next round on May 17th when they will face the winners of the clash between Rhode Island Oceaneers and Newtown Pride FC (Connecticut).

The competition involves clubs from along the Atlantic seaboard, stretching from Massachusetts down to Virginia and the D.C. area. The overall winner of the Region 1 Qualifiers will gain entry to the 2016 Lamar Hunt 2016 U.S. Open Cup. The top 91 clubs in the country compete, with MLS sides entering at the fourth round stage.

The club would like to congratulate the A side and managers Phil Keane and Fabrice Matichard on their success, and wish them luck in progressing even further in the competition.

Sunday also proved productive for the Over 30 A side, as Aidan Finnan’s charges notched their first victory of the NEOTHSL Division 2S season with a 2-1 success over Boston White Eagles at Danehy Park.

The aforementioned Phil Keane opened the scoring for Wanderers in the first half, with the Dubliner applying a cool finish to polish off some fine build up work by Kevin Gorham.

Kendall continued to dominate after the break, with Javier Arnez and Ben Sprayregen both looking sharp. But the second goal came from a familiar source when striker Jonah Fontela produced a typically precise strike to complete a flowing Kendall move.

It looked like Fontela would bag his second goal of the day when he latched onto a nicely-weighted through ball by Darren Skehan. The chance was snuffed out, however, when the Eagles’ goalkeeper inexplicably escaped censure for unceremoniously upending Fontela.

Not that the incident affected the final outcome, and Finnan’s troops will look to build on this result when they take on Southborough United next weekend.
