Hozier to perform at Boston Calling music festival

By Tony Swift

Acclaimed Irish singer-songwriter Hozier returns to Boston this month to perform at the Boston Calling music festival at City Hall Plaza on September 27th. Hozier, 25, has had a meteoric rise to fame since the release of his debut album “Take Me to Church” in 2013. Last year, the first single released from that album, also entitled “Take Me to Church”, achieved widespread global popularity, becoming a number-one hit in 12 countries, as well as peaking at number two in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Originally from Bray, County Wicklow, Hozier will be performing in Boston for the third time in less than 12 months, each time playing to larger audiences. His first appearance came on Halloween night last year when he played to a packed house at the historic Paradise Rock Club, where U2 famously performed in 1981. He returned in March of this year to play to a growing fan base at the House of Blues.

Hozier has been busy performing in high profile summer festivals throughout the world. However, he took time out from his schedule in June to perform an acoustic version of one of his songs at the funeral of J-1 student Olivia Burke. The 21-year-old Irish student was tragically killed along with 5 other Irish students when a balcony collapsed in Berkeley, California.

Now in its third year, Boston Calling has quickly gained a reputation as a must-see event for music lovers. In May, festival goers were treated to an eclectic range of performers in glorious sunshine in the unique setting of Boston City Hall Plaza. This month’s event, taking place over 3 days promises its strongest lineup yet including: Alabama Shakes, Chvrches, Ben Howard, Alt-J, Of Monsters and Men, Misterwives, Daughter, Twin Shadow, Nature Ruess, Chromeo, Walk The Moon, Bully, Father John Misty, Doomtree, Sturgill Simpson and Dirty Bangs.

Boston Calling is a three day festival that takes place from September 25-27 at City Hall Plaza in the heart of Boston. Tickets start at $60 for general admission on Friday, $85 for general admission on Saturday or Sunday, while a 3 day general admission ticket is $175. VIP and group tickets are also available.
