Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh meets Pope Francis

Mayor Walsh was one of 35 mayors to travel to Rome last week to participate in a conference on climate change and human trafficking, where he met with Pope Francis. Walsh later spoke with reporters about his sense of spirituality and his admiration for the Pontiff.

Pope Francis invited city leaders to the two-day symposium, instead of the leaders of nations, because the Vatican believes that mayors are able to more quickly address the kinds of issues discussed at the event. The declaration called on national leaders to make a fast transition to carbon-free energy sources and to take steps to protect and restore healthy environmental conditions, in ways that would also improve the lives of the world's poor. The meeting was streamed live on YouTube and the hashtag #MayorsCare was used by the various Mayors on Twitter.

Mayor Walsh told WGBH that he and other mayors are well positioned to confront challenging global issues. “We are the body of government that can make the most change,” he said. "There really is an opportunity for us as mayors to make a difference."

Kilpadder Famine Burrial Ground, Innishannon, Co. Cork

By Richard Archer

On Friday, July 24, 2015 the Kilpadder Famine Burial Ground, located outside the town of Innishannon was dedicated by a Mass. said by Fr. Crowley with approx. one hundred invited guests.

In 2013,the Knights and Ladies of St. Finbarr - Cork club held a fund raiser in order to clear the area of brush and overgrowth and now two years later, the burial ground may be visited. During the famine period a large number of people died from starvation and were buried in this grave site so Fr. Crowley requested prayers and masses for those that may have been forgotten.

A reception followed the dedication of light refreshments provided by the local community after the Mass. Mary Nolan O'Brien, Secretary thanked all for their cooperation and contribution to this project. She indicated without the goodwill of people, this dedication would not have been possible.

The Knights and Ladies of St. Finbarr - Cork club were happy to be able to contribute in a small way.

Belfast Youth Orchestra visit Boston

As part of their 60th Anniversary Celebrations, the 82 members of the City of Belfast Youth Orchestra (CBYO) toured the East Coast of the US. Their first concert was at Boston City Hall where the Orchestra performed for Mayor Marty Walsh helping to foster relations between Belfast and it's new Sister City of Boston. The second concert in New England was at the Irish Cultural Centre (ICC) in Canton on July 17. Once again the Orchestra Members received a very warm welcome from the Irish American Community.

Originally formed in 1955, the CBYO is considered one of the top youth orchestras in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Europe. As the first stop in its 60th Anniversary Concert Tour to the United States, Conductor Paul McBride and the 82 member orchestra performed a mixture of light classical repertoire with some Irish favorites.
