Although not born in Ireland, Susan Clarke lived there for 10 years, completing high school there and earning a bachelor’s in math and economics from University College Dublin.
Now the executive vice president and chief operating officer of AIU Holdings, Accident and Health Division in New York, the first generation Irish American has not forgotten about Ireland.
“Of my six siblings, five of them currently live in Ireland. So I feel as much at home in Ireland as I do in the States,” says Clarke.
Married with four young boys, Aidan, Kieran, Sean and Owen, Clarke wants them to feel a strong connection to Ireland the way she does. To ensure this, she takes them to Ireland as frequently as possible.
“I am very proud to be Irish for many reasons, but what makes me most proud is when I think of my parents who both came to the U.S. separately, at a very young age,” Clarke says.
“They left behind their family and friends and the life they knew in Ireland to seek a better future for themselves.”
