DR. Elizabeth Frances Martin is principal of Elizabeth F. Martin Fine Art based in New York. Her company seeks to guide, educate and advise collectors of Irish art and to source key works of art for them.
Martin is developing a television documentary on Irish art for U.S. and Irish audiences with her production partner Deirdre Brennan of Castletown Productions. Martin has lectured and delivered papers abroad and in the U.S. at the Ireland-U.S. Council, the Society of Four Arts, the American Ireland Fund, the Irish Georgian Society, Sotheby’s, the Irish American Cultural Association, the American Irish Historical Society, the Women on Ireland Research Network and the American Conference for Irish Studies.
Martin was co-curator of the exhibit “Home and Away: Contemporary Irish Art,” at the Haggerty Museum of Art in Milwaukee, and the Irish Arts Center in New York.
In addition she works with the John Martin Gallery of London to bring contemporary Irish artists to exhibitions in New York City.
A native of Needham, Massachusetts, Martin received a doctoral degree in art history from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, a master’s from Hunter College, and an undergraduate degree in art history from UMass Amherst. She is a member of the Ireland-U.S. Council and the Irish Georgian Society.
She traces her Irish ancestry three generations back to Connemara and the Aran Islands. She travels to Ireland regularly for business and for academic study.
“My Irish heritage is very important to me,” Martin says. “I take great pleasure in educating others through my business and as an avid lecturer about the rich, artistic heritage that we share. Many people are not as aware of the abundance of Irish art history; most are more familiar with the literary and musical traditions.”
