Gerald C O’Sullivan is a Consultant Surgeon at Mercy University Hospital, Cork, and the founder and director in Chief of the Cork Cancer Research Centre. CCRC is at the forefront in developing new treatments for cancer patients. Current research at the Centre is solving the critical challenge of secondary cancer and is directed at three research themes: Cell Death and Survival Mechanisms, Novel Therapeutics including Gene Therapy and Device Development.
A graduate of University College Cork (UCC), O’Sullivan is now Professor of Surgery at UCC. O’Sullivan is a past president of the European Surgical Association and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, where he studied, in addition to the University of Alberta, Canada, University of Chicago, and American College of Surgeons. O’Sullivan has been awarded honorary fellowships of the colleges of Glasgow, Edinburgh and the American College of Surgeons.
O’Sullivan has a voluminous publication record and has given numerous eponymous and invited lectures, and has received several international awards and honors including a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Irish Journal of Medical Science and the Royal Academy of Medicine.
In 1989-91 with Prof Kevin Collins he isolated several probiotic organisms - which led to the development of Alimentary Health. One of these probiotics – a bifidobacteria – after successful validation by clinical trial is available in the USA - for treatment of irritable Syndrome - under the tradename ALIGN.
O’Sullivan’s plan for the future is to bring to clinical reality an effective gene therapy for cancer. Married with three children, O’ Sullivan resides in Cork.
