Mullen, James

James Mullen is President and CEO of Biogen Idec, a global leader in the discovery, development, manufacturing, and commercialization of innovative therapies. Founded in 1978, Biogen Idec has benefited patients worldwide with significant products that address diseases such as lymphoma, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.  There are approximately 4,700 Biogen Idec employees worldwide. Mullen joined Biogen Inc. in 1989. Prior to being named CEO and Chairman, he held the positions of President and Chief Operating Officer, Vice President, International, Vice President, and Director, Facilities and Engineering. Prior to Biogen Idec, Mullen held various positions at SmithKline Beckman Corporation (now GlaxoSmithKline plc). Mullen holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an M.B.A. from Villanova University. Mullen is a fourth generation Irish American, and traces his roots to County Cavan. Mullen will retire as President and CEO of Biogen Idec in June 2010.
Married with four children, Mullen resides in Needham, Massachusetts.
