Fitzgerald, Garret
Garret FitzGerald is chair of Pharmacology and Director of the Institute of Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (ITMAT). Penn ranks second nationally in National Institutes of Health (NIH) dollars received and its department of Pharmacology ranks consistently in the top 3 in the nation. ITMAT is the world’s first institute designed to foster translation of the discoveries of basic science to the benefit of human health and has more than 800 members. Born in Dublin, FitzGerald studied Medicine in UCD. Trained in science in London, Cologne and Nashville, he directed Clinical Pharmacology at Vanderbilt before returning to the UCD chair of Medicine where he directed the center for Cardiovascular Science. He returned to the US where FitzGerald’s work has contributed fundamentally to the development of low dose aspirin for cardio protection and he was the first to predict and then explain the cardiovascular hazard from drugs such as Vioxx and Celebrex. His laboratory was also the first to discover a molecular clock in the cardiovascular system and he has elucidated the role of the clock in cardiovascular and metabolic function. He has trained more than 100 physicians and scientists including many from Ireland. FitzGerald has played an important role in supporting the organization and funding of science in Ireland and the UK as well as in the US where he serves on the Science Board of the FDA, the Peer Review Advisory Board of the NIH and the Drug Forum of the Institute of Medicine.
