King, Peter

Rep. Peter King, a Republican, is currently serving his ninth term in the House of Representatives, serving the 3rd District of New York on Long Island.

King is ranking member of the Homeland Security Committee and also serves on the Financial Services Committee and Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

Prior to serving in Congress, King was elected to three terms as comptroller of Nassau County. Before serving in county government, King had extensive experience as a practicing attorney and civic leader. He began his political career in November 1977 by winning election to the Hempstead Town Council.

He is the author of three published novels, Terrible Beauty, Deliver Us From Evil and Vale of Tears which are based upon his political experiences in Ireland.

King is a graduate of St. Francis College, and received a JD from the University of Notre Dame.

King, whose grandparents came from counties Limerick and Galway, was the first prominent U.S. politician to publicly support Sinn Fein. He has made numerous trips to Northern Ireland in support of the peace process there.

King was the grand marshal of the 1985 New York St. Patrick’s Day Parade. He is also a distinguished member of the Fighting 69th Regiment.

King is a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Nassau County Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.

King and his wife Rosemary have two children, and two grandchildren.
