Tom Power, born in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, has been head of the Great Irish Famine Commemoration Committee since 1996, when a group of individuals decided to construct a monument in Sydney to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Great Hunger.

Tom worked with the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales to commission the artwork which depicted symbolically victims as well as survivors who immigrated to Australia.

He also helps to run a website with the Irish Famine Commemoration Committee which connects Irish-Australians to their roots by posting genealogical and historical information.

Tom obtained degrees in philosophy and theology from Gregorian University in Rome. He was a teacher in New South Wales and Queensland before working as a senior parole officer in the New South Wales Department of Corrective Services.
