Keating, Paul

The Australians

Paul Keating served as the 44th Prime Minister of Australia from 1991-1996.

During his time in office Keating focused on transforming the Australian financial system and bridging the gap and healing wounds between Aboriginals and other Australians through the passage of the Indigenous Lands Amendment.

Born into an Irish-Australian family, Keating left school at 15 and began his career in the Labor Party at the age of 25 when he was elected to the House of Representatives. Since his time as Prime Minister, Keating has been the topic of several award-winning biographies including "Recollections of a Bleeding Heart" by Don Watson. He has also penned books himself including his foreign-policy-focused "Engagement: Australia Faces the Asia-Pacific". Currently a Visiting Professor at the University of New South Wales, Keating is outspoken on the need to name Sydney the new capital of Australia.
