Egan, Kenny
The Irish
The Olympics brought three medals to Ireland, with the silver in light-heavyweight boxing going to Kenny Egan.
In the final, Egan fought Chinese champion and local favorite Zhang Xiaping. The Irishman performed brilliantly, but there was some controversy over the scoring system when several punches landed by Egan were not properly scored by judges.
The Dubliner’s dignity in handling the affair was truly impressive. The light-heavyweight boxer hails from Clondalkin in Dublin and fights out of the Neilstown Boxing Club.
Egan has won eight national titles and hopes to lead the Irish boxing team at the 2012 Games in London.
