Sarah Palin may be famous for several reasons, but lending her name to newborn babies is the latest reason why the former Alaskan governor is hitting the headlines.

According to data from the Baby Center, the number of parents naming their child Palin tripled from 2008-2009 in the U.S alone.

Palin, a mother of five and grandmother of one, chose unusual names for her children such as Track, Trig, Bristol, Willow and Piper.

The popularity in her name spiked when the 47-year-old was announced as John McCain’s running mate in the 2008 presidential elections.

The number of recorded Palins by the Baby Center website grew from three per million in 2008 to 20 million in 2009 and just under 16 million in 2010.

In an interview with the Today show, Baby Name Wizard author Laura Wattenberg, said: “I would be very surprised if we saw a boom in the name Palin. It would be flying in the face of contemporary American history in political names.”

Speaking about her maternal side, in her book Palin said: “there’s no better training ground for politics than motherhood."
