Irish teen and half-sister seek refuge in Utah against abusive mom

An Irish teenager and her Mormon half sister in Provo, Utah, have filed a temporary protective order against their mother alleging they were abused while under her care.

Shannon Cowan, 14, and her half sister Melita Carter, 28, obtained a temporary protective order against Caroline Cowan, their mother, in Provo’s 4th District Court in August, an order that prevents the girl’s mother from taking her back home.

Carter lived with her mother in Dublin before moving to Utah at the age of 12 to live with her father.  She claims she was abused by her mother while under her care.

Last week Cowan went on radio in Ireland saying she was worried that the Mormons in Utah were keeping her child in an effort to brainwash her.

In the affidavit filed with the court, Carter claims she and her younger sister suffered physical abuse at the hands of their mother.

On one occasion, Carter claimed, Cowan beat her for putting her hand out a window to feel the rain.

In the petition Carter asked for a protective order for herself, her husband, her sister (Shannon) and her daughter. She said she feared Cowan would retaliate against her.

On August 9 Carter and Shannon reported the abuse to the Provo Police.

Police Captain Cliff Argyle said “the child came to the police department with her sister to report incidents that had occurred in Dublin, Ireland.”

Although Argyle could not take any action on the alleged abuse because it occurred out of the Provo jurisdiction, he said he did report the incidents to authorities in Dublin. A later request from police in Dublin seeking a check on Shannon’s health was completed and the report came back that the girl was fine and staying in Provo willingly.

Shannon came to visit her sister in the summer and was due to return to Ireland in August. She never returned.

Cowan’s attorney, Sean Petersen, based in Utah, told reporters his client’s daughter should be back in Ireland attending school.
“Obviously, Caroline is denying any allegations that are in the petition,” he said.

Nathan Shill-Carter’s attorney told the Irish Voice on Tuesday that Carter denies claims made by her mother that she is trying to keep Shannon in Utah so she can be “brainwashed” by the Mormon community.

“This is untrue and we deny any such allegations,” said Shill.

He also said the Shannon has started school in Provo and is getting on fine.

Petersen said Cowan is currently in the hospital in Ireland and is concerned for her daughter.

He said Cowan would fight the protective order, which is temporary until a final order is issued. He also said he does not know if Carter will be successful in obtaining a permanent order.

“By listing (the teen) on it, she may be stretching,” he said.

Shirll said, “Right now she (Carter) is just trying to do what she feels necessary to protect Shannon and do what’s best for her. She is just seeking whatever judicial intervention that is available.”

Who ever wrote the Mormons pay for every member has got it backwards..The families are responsible for paying their tithe to the church...They have at least one day a week of fasting, the money saved from these fasts are given to the church..I'm not a Mormon..I'm a Grandmother in IDAHO.. They are a people strong in their beliefs, even if I don't agree with them, they are THEIR beliefs. They work hard and most are very good parents..please don't jump to conclusions. The main church will kick out any one they are certain are polygamists.Their BOOK of Mormon is an addition to the Bible. They are Christians and in most cases the kids go to BIBLE study for an hour each day from about the sixth grade..If you are going to bring religion into this discussion, please have enough true interest to study it a bit! Thank YOU...for caring about this child. There is some reason she does not care to go back to her Mother.Even if the reason is a belief there is more opportunity in Utah! What ever it was the question was answered when the courts decided to send her home...
The religion ties into it because Mormon(Latter Day Saints) pay for every member you have in your family. As Melita has said so herself, she has financial difficulties so of course if she takes Shannon in she'll be paid a large sum of money. So it's not "ignorance" ok? I don't mean to offend you but before you accuse the family of being ignorant please google it first. I'm a friend of Shannon's and I can very well say she's very safe, and very happy to be home. She's got the support of me and all of her close friends and class mates. And Melita left Ireland when she was nine, not twelve.
A peculiar melodrama with neither top nor tail.
The child obviously wants to be rid of her mother, for whatever reason. Since her sister is a Mormon I doubt that she is looking to join in a fast and loose American lifestyle. Perhaps she likes living among people who do not drink, who practice good manners, who do not scream, or she has fallen in love with the beauty of Utah. Whatever the reason, the child should be allowed to make her own decision on where she wants to live.

Can you tell me why the religious back round of the other family members involved in this article have been left out? Seems rather biased against the Mormons. How does thier faith brainwash differently from any other? Ignorance breeds fear....and more ignorance. Why is this even worthy of an article? As if this sort of thing doesn't go on in Protestant or dare I say Catholic families. Lets not forget we are dealing with a teenage girl. Having been one myself long ago, I know whow they like to manipulate to get what they want.
There are too many unasked and unanswered questions in this article. The young girls mother spent hundreds of dollars on air fare to allow her daughter to visit her sister in Utah. This does not sound like an abusive mother to me. Perhaps the child prefers the freewheeling life in America to a disciplined home environment?
